As most everyone knows, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) has been a bit busy since that fateful day back in 2010 when he graced the small screen and became Sherlock Holmes. Following the BBC/PBS premiere of the original Sherlock series, Benedict has shared his talents in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, War Horse, Parade’s End and upcoming in Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Hobbit.
In his ‘spare time’, there was his brilliant, award-winning, stage portrayal of both Dr. Victor Frankenstein and The Creature in the National Theatre presentation of Frankenstein alongside Jonny Lee Miller. It’s been a long road, but nothing that happened overnight in getting from Sherlock to Star Trek as recapped in the New York Times. This audition story alone, for his role in Star Trek, should be fodder for the nest iPhone commercial.
Oh yeah, there’s also his part in the new Star Trek film where, secretively, he was cast as a “the not-so-good guy”. The first photos have now come out showing Benedict filming fight scenes with Spock, played by Zachary Quinto. According to sources from TrekMovie, Cumberbatch will play exiled Eugenics War leader Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek 2.
As if anyone needs a reminder, Sherlock 2, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, premieres this Sunday on PBS’ Masterpiece series. If you missed last nights New York Q & A session with Benedict, Sherlock creators, Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue and Masterpiece executive producer, Rebecca Eaton, enjoy.
