There are times that social media can be a wonderful thing. Besides Twitter, Tumblr can be particularly addictive. Take the Let’s Draw Sherlock tumblr page dedicated to organizing creative group projects about Sherlock Holmes. Thanks to Sherlockology, we were able to quickly sift through the hundreds, if not thousands, of entries so far and bring you what has to be one of the best so far from Consulting Piskies, a brilliant piece based on Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks. Once you begin to dig your way through some of the other submissions, you’ll quickly see that the current challenge is to reinterpret famous works.

Time for you to unlock the inner artist and submit something from your own artistic Sherlock mind palace. The rules are quite simple. According to the organizers, choose a famous image be it artwork, photograph, or sculpture, and then reinterpret it as Sherlock. You can draw a picture, sculpt, cosplay, photo manip, pretty much any medium you are comfortable with. Deadline is 3 June.

Just in case you don’t remember Hopper’s most famous painting from 1942 from which ‘consulting piskies’ drew upon….

Throw all the genius of the Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Fallon, Red Nose Day and Downton Arbys parodies out the window. What better way to put a bright spot on the Crawley’s world and begin to heal a tearful Downton Abbey nation than a Downton musical! Yes, it’s time for Downton Abbey: The Musical.

Filmed at 54 Below, the legendary Studio 54′s secret VIP room in New York, actor and comedian Colin Andrew Mochrie (Whose Line Is It Anyway?) is brilliant as Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, who explains his decision to create a Downton musical in between cuts of songs that would fit perfectly into Edwardian England.

Clear a space on the shelf, this has ‘Tony’ written all over it. After all, Carson sings about tea, Mrs. Hughes tries to get him to embrace a newfangled way of making his favorite drink and Mary and Tom sing sad songs while they hold their babies. if that’s not award worthy, Mary Stout, who portrays Mrs. Patmore, reveals it’s been a lifelong dream of hers to play Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd. FYI, Mrs. Hughes is Randy Graff, who won a Tony Award for her performance in City of Angels.

With the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who just around the corner this November, now is the time to begin planning that ultimate, not-to-be missed, Doctor Who anniversary party that will make you the envy of the neighborhood. You can stock up on all you want on Doctor Who action figures, mugs, t-shirts, floating TARDIS’s, or desktop Daleks, but the real party will be where the TARDIS inspired fridge is!

Thanks to the resident geeks over at the pop culture blog Geekologie who tracked this down, the Doctor’s police box on the outside, time machine on the inside can be yours for a nominal fee of under $200 (approximately £122). The TARDIS refrigerator decal was made by artists and engineers B.E.Johnson and Joy Alyssa Day. The customized refrigerator kit will turn your fridge into a very special Police Box. The top section is a separate structure that includes the sign, the peak roof and a working beacon.

According to Geekologie, the skin integrates best with a French Door refrigerator, because of the way the fridge doors better match the Police Box. A single door, with or without a separate freezer, also looks cool; it just doesn’t open in the manner of a Police Box.

Unfortunately scientists have not yet figured out how to make it bigger on the inside so you’ll have to make do with a standard sized TARDIS fridge for now.

A TARDIS Fridge not in your immediate future? How about a Doctor Who Remote-Control Flying TARDIS?

Just a thought….FYI, it’s coming in July from the Nerd Approved Shop.

Ok, maybe the TARDIS was a bit pricey. But, have you ever wanted to abandon the rat race and chuck it all to buy (and run) a cozy little B & B with a view? Worked for Bob Newhart years ago, why not you?

More from the real estate bloggers over at Movoto (based on an idea from Andrew Liszewski at Gizmodo) where they have found a way to combine their fondness for British television with their periodic down time during the work day. This time they attempt to put a price tag on what has to be the most recognizable fictional hotel on the planet, Fawlty Towers. While the hotel that the series was loosely based on, the Hotel Gleneagles, is now a Best Western in Torquay, the method of determining the actual asking price was the well-known, amongst real estate folks at least, Comparison Model which compares hotels in the area to determine the cost of $/room. The much easier but highly questionable Mini-Fridge Method of determining what a hotel charges for a can of Coke and multiplying by $10,000 was abandoned when it was discovered that The Gleneagles Hotel doesn’t sell Cokes. Go figure.

First up – assign a value to the location, which is the primary selling point for most, if not all, property. How can you possibly put a price tag on the English Riviera? Second, revenue potential. With 26 rooms in total, 22 to those lovely seaside guests such as the Major, Miss Tibbs and Miss Gatsby and 4 reserved for ‘staff’, asking price was calculated based on potential occupancy of the 22 bookable rooms. Based on similar hotel listings in the Torquay/Buckinghamshire area, the average per room cost is approximately $46,000. So, doing simple math, to acquire the iconic Fawlty Towers will cost you only $9,942,000. Sounds like a lot, but a far cry from the $2.58+ billion that the TARDIS would cost.

Up tomorrow, if you’re wanting something in-between your dream B&B and the ultimate time machine/spacecraft, maybe putting in an offer for Downton Abbey will be more to your liking.

Better get our your big boy checkbook….

According to the self-proclaimed crazy novelty bloggers over at Movoto where the lighter side of real estate rears its head every once in awhile, it’s going to cost you anywhere from just a little over $50K to just over $2.5 billion for the likes of the TARDIS as a potential second home. On the upside, depending on how you look at it, you might be able to ‘steal’ the TARDIS for a mere $50,000, but, that’s just for the outside. To get the inside, you’re going to have to shell out a little over $2.58 billion more. Let’s take a look from a real estate perspective….

Location, Location, Location

When you look at it from a pure real estate perspective, the Time and Relative Dimension In Space or TARDIS, is both a time machine and a spacecraft, all-in-one. To begin with, the Movoto folks abide by the real estate golden rule that location is one of the most important aspects of determining price. Given the fact that the TARDIS is a spaceship where location and view are pretty much destined to be perfect at any time, this gives the property a leg up on any other property available as the view, according to the listing, never has to be a brick wall.

Size does matter in real estate

While it’s virtually impossible to determine just how big the TARDIS is (on the inside, of course). Fortunately, in the episode, “The Invasion of Time”, the TARDIS was described as being the size of the Empire State Building, or 2,248,355 square feet. As you can see from the infographic below, at an average London per sq foot price of $1,147.65, the inside and of the TARDIS would cost $2.580,324,616.75. That, coupled with the cost of the outside, which would be $50,497, makes the TARDIS a very affordable $2,580,375,113. Any takers?

Check back tomorrow for another, possibly more attractive, real estate listing that I think you just might be interested in. It’s certainly more affordable. How about putting in an offer on Fawlty Towers?

With the 50th anniversary of everyone’s favorite Time Lord looming on the horizon, how can you not be already thinking of how to plan that ultimate watching party come November 2013.

As I’m sure you are fully aware, the Daleks are those cranky cyborgs that seem fixated on the concept of universal domination. Created by Terry Nation, they first appeared on Doctor Who back in 1963 and were quickly established as one of the Doctor’s deadliest enemies, if not THE deadliest, as supported by numerous surveys over the years. For almost 50 years, viewers have watched Time Lord after Time Lord battle these evil beings whose singular goal is to “Exterminate! Exterminate!”

While nobody should want to see the world through a Dalek’s point of view…on the outside chance you do, the Doctor Who: Eyestalk app, which is available through the App Store, is a pretty simple but intriguing photo-filter app. Essentially, you take a photo or video and then run it through one of seven filters that correspond to different Daleks that have appeared on the show. The app is pretty easy to use, and your Dalek-eye photos and videos are easy to share on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.

Should you tire of the Doctor Who: Eyestalk app, you may want to check out the iAmaDalek app from the BBC. This lets you actually sound like a Dalek. You record a message, and the app plays it back with your voice all harsh and mechanical-sounding.

Thanks to the Internets, we’ve been able to see the extent to which Downton Abbey fans will go on a worldwide basis to showcase their creativity and shout from the rooftops their fondness for ‘all-things Downton’. We’ve seen a DIY video on making your very own Downton Abbey gingerbread house, more parody sketches than the law allows and instruction on how to own your own Dowager Countess paper doll set (with several different expressions). Now, appropriately, given the time of year, comes an opportunity to get your very own Valentines-Day themed Downton Abbey cards. After the last couple of episodes, I’m would have bet money that Lord Grantham wouldn’t be getting one of these from Lady Cora any time soon, but time heals all wounds this time of year.

Valentine Abbey

Cartoonist Chad Thomas has created the perfect set of Valentines cards for the Downton Abbey fan in your life to show just how much they mean to you. As Chad tells the story on his website, he and his wife are big fans of the Masterpiece series and they just couldn’t get enough of the series like most of the U.S. at this point.

As is the case with most of the Internets, all four of these brilliant cards are available for download for free on Chad’s site but you do have the opportunity to donate to the cause should you feel so inclined to do so to say thank you and encourage more creativity. You can see more of Chad’s creativity at his website. In case you haven’t found that perfect Valentine’s Day card yet, how about this as a possibility….

You might remember, back in April, we reported on the Lego process for submission of ideas that requires at least 10,000 supporters before an idea will be considered. Needless to say, the concept of a Lego Winchester Pub from the British zombie invasion film, Shaun of the Dead was well received. The ‘Make the Winchester project’ was the brainchild of Pixel Fox, a 3D artist in Cape Town, and Yatkuu, a Data Manager for pharmaceutical company in Belguim, who both proudly shared a long-time common passion for the brick.

Sadly, there will be no Lego version of the Winchester Pub from the brilliant mind palaces of Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright as, not long after it garnered the necessary support, the ‘official’ Lego statement was that as good as the model was, the film Shaun of the Dead, “…contained content that is not appropriate for our core target audience of children ages 6-11. Pout not, British zombie invasion flick fans. As amazingly cool as it might have been to have the Lego model of everyone’s favorite zombie local, we bring you Shaun of the Dead paper people for your enjoyment.

For those few on the planet not familiar with Shaun of the Dead, Shaun (Simon Pegg) is a salesman whose life has no direction. His younger colleagues show him no respect, he has a rocky relationship with his stepfather, Phillip, a tense relationship with his housemate, Pete, because of Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun’s crude best friend who lives on their couch and deals marijuana. His girlfriend, Liz, is dissatisfied with their social life, as it consists primarily of spending every evening at the Winchester, Shaun and Ed’s favorite pub. They never do anything alone together – Shaun always brings Ed, and Liz brings her flatmates, David and Dianne.

The next morning, after a miserable day at work, an uprising of zombies has overwhelmed the town, but Shaun is too busy dealing with his problems and too hungover to notice. He and Ed become aware of what is happening after watching reports on TV, as zombies attack their house. After fighting back with weapons from the shed, they decide they need to go somewhere safe. Shaun and Ed decide that the safest place they know is the Winchester, and they plan to collect Shaun’s mother, Barbara, Phillip, Liz, and her flatmates. Everyone takes refuge inside the pub, and Shaun joins them after giving the zombies the slip.

Six months after the outbreak, the uninfected have returned to daily life, while the remaining zombies, retaining their instincts, are used as cheap labor and entertainment. Liz and Shaun have moved in together in Shaun’s house, and Shaun is keeping Ed, who is now a zombie, tethered in the shed and playing video games.

The paper crafts are designed by ‘sally’ and you can download for hours of endless entertainment. Unfortunately, it won’t bring back the Lego Winchester, but it will pass the time until Sherlock 3 or Downton Abbey 4. Who knows, maybe a little mash-up with your Dowager Countess and Doc Martin paper dolls might be the next great YouTube video waiting to happen.

As I’m sure you are keenly aware, we have talked incessantly in recent months about what it takes in the pop-culture world of the 21st century to ‘have arrived’. There was a much simpler time when if you were the subject of a Weekend Update with Chevy Chase segment on Saturday Night Live then that’s all you would need. In later years, being a part of Seinfeld, the ultimate show about ‘nothing’, was like money in the bank in racking up pop-culture units of good. It’s a bit more difficult these days, unfortunately, in the world of 24/7 media attention.

For a program like Downton Abbey, life has been good with two brilliant Downton Sixbey sketches on Latenight with Jimmy Fallon, a Saturday Night Live spoof, a Downton Abbey paper doll set, a possible Super Nintendo game and, believe it or not, a DIY project on how to make a Downton Abbey of your very own…out of gingerbread.

All that is nice, but now comes the ultimate tribute that would place anyone at the top of the pop-culture world….a place on everyone’s favorite street, Sesame Street. When Sesame Street decides to poke fun at you, you really ‘have arrived’, no question. This cute beyond words Muppet parody of Downton Abbey will air as part of the series’ upcoming season 43, which begins on Monday, February 4 on PBS.

Upside Downton Abbey on sesame Street

Upside Downton Abbey opens with a Muppet version of Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess, in a smashing purple hat btw, requesting a spot of tea from her felt-covered Mr. Carson. Problem is, as the name suggests, the estate and everything in it is upside down, so the tea pours right out of the teapot and onto the ceiling.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPqL-1aSbn0

Same with the crumpets and the steak-and-kidney pie she requests, until her butler humbly recommends ***SPOILER ALERT*** she rename the estate Rightside Upton Abbey to avoid any further spills. She hands down a royal decree, Carson throws a lever, and everything is right-side up again. If only the current series 3 issues at the real Downton Abbey could be so easily taken care of…

And I thought Downton Abbey had achieved the ultimate pop-culture status by virtue of its’ two Jimmy Fallon parody sketches, one Saturday Night Live skit and having it’s own Facebook page. Not so. The program that has taken both sides of the Atlantic by storm through its first three seasons on ITV and PBS has now arrived with the thought that there could be a Downton Abbey Super Nintendo game. Now THAT’s achieving pop-culture status.

As reported by Digital Spy this isn’t reality as of yet, but you have ago start somewhere.

The game’s protagonist is a new footman at the manor, who must complete tasks including collecting missing cigars for a dinner party, fluffing pillows and setting the dinner table.

Mary Crawley asks the lead character to spy on Mrs Patmore, whom she suspects is trying to poison her husband Matthew with her cooking, and butler Mr Carson serves as a means of saving progress.

The graphics were lifted from the 1995 survival-horror game Clock Tower and the SNES version of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. As you can see, while it’s in the early trailer only stage, it could happen. Is it bad to immediately think “I would so play this”? What better way to pass the time between the upcoming series 3 finale and the start of series 4 this Fall in the UK and January 2014 in the States?
